This museum took over the work of collecting/researching the historical documents related to Shimonoseki and the surroundings and exhibiting from Chofu Museum.
Following the theme of "The history and culture of Shimonoseki blessed with the strait", they mainly exhibit the Chofu Mori family's belongings and documents related to the Meiji restoration. They storage the largest number of letters written by Sakamoto Ryoma in Japan.
In addition, they run the guidance interaction exhibitions about cultural properties and tourist information in Shimonoseki city and sometimes a special exhibition about a specific theme of Shimonoseki.
